Backup Notion to SFTP
Your NAS, your VPS, your basement server. If it speaks SFTP, Backup Notion can deliver to it: scheduled Markdown exports of your whole workspace, pushed to a path you choose.
14-day free trial · 2-minute setup
The Backup Notion dashboard running a scheduled backup: scanning 704 pages, exporting them to Markdown, collecting 1,212 media files, and uploading 633 megabytes to SFTP, with a history of past runs below.
Notion to SFTP in three steps
01
Connect Notion
Sign in with Notion and share the teamspaces you want protected. The access is read-only.
02
Add your server
Host, port, path, and an SSH key or password. We recommend a dedicated user with write access to a single directory.
03
Pick a schedule
Daily, weekly, or monthly. Each backup arrives as a ZIP of Markdown and media. Drop it into restic, borg, or whatever you snapshot with.
Everything in your workspace
Every backup covers all pages and nested subpages, databases with their properties, images, PDFs, and attachments from the teamspaces you authorize, exported as clean Markdown that mirrors your workspace structure. Pro plans include comments too.
SFTP questions
Key-based or password authentication?
Both work; SSH keys are recommended. Credentials are encrypted at rest in a vault and only used during transfer.
What should I set up on my server?
A dedicated user with write access to one directory is enough. You give us the host, port, username, and path; backups land in that path as timestamped ZIPs.
Does it work with my NAS?
If it speaks SFTP, yes. Synology, QNAP, TrueNAS, a VPS, or a Raspberry Pi in a closet all work the same way.
Is the transfer encrypted, and do you store anything?
Transfers run over SSH end to end. The backup streams through our delivery relay to your server without being written to disk, and our working copy is deleted once your server confirms it.
Can I run my own retention?
That's the point. Backups are plain files on your server, so rotate, snapshot, and prune them with the tools you already use.
My server is behind a firewall. What do I allow?
Inbound SFTP (usually port 22) from our delivery relay. If you allowlist by IP, write to hello@backupnotion.to for the current addresses.
Does this fit a 3-2-1 backup strategy?
Yes. Pair SFTP with cloud storage on the Enterprise plan to keep copies in two places, plus the original in Notion.
